That Rasta Resto Bob Marlin in Naga City

If you search online for where to eat in Naga City, Bob Marlin is probably the most prominent in the search results. Crispy Pata is their most sought after menu, but as I am travelling alone, and their serving would probably good for 5 persons, I ordered fish and chips instead (nothing spectacular about this dish though).

They have open air seating fr smokers like me ;-)

Below is their menu.

Then, there's also that function room for corporate or group gathers.

For functions, they have P195-P595 per pax set menu

see also RED PLATTER and BIGGS Diner menu

Sunny view Hotel Naga City

The rooms would have been good; Spacious and mattress is soft; aircon is OK;  TV is 21 inch, Mobile network reception is great (Smart user)...

Only problem is, water, in my room (301) at the third floor, was too weak. Toilet flush is not working and sink is a little clogged. There's also no elevator.. So! If you're into budget, their P250/night fan is probably OK. They also allow late check out for P50/hr and half day (half the daily rate) for check outs beyond 4pm. But if you're going for the aircon.. You might want to consider something else.

Below is another flyer I got from CBD Hotel near the bus station

Looking for where to eat in Naga City? Check out BOB MARLIN, RED PLATTER, or BIGGS DINER

Travelling Philippines? Follow @CheapBedsPH on Instagram for geotagged backpacker accomodation below PHP400 (US$9) for easier searches.

Bicol's own: Bigg's diner!

Apart from Pampanga, Cagayan, Bacolod, and Gensan, Bicol is one more of the destinations where I don't frown on food.

I have been in Bicol quite a few times, but as I am saving on budget, rarely do I try out on the restaurants. normally just eateries on any corner.

Tonight, I have a little bit of freedom on budget so tried out Bigg's Diner.

Apart from pictures of accomodations I stay in, i make it a habit too to post details about some restaurants I eat at. Along with the taste, As a budget traveller, I'm quite wary of the price. Below are prices of the food at Bigg's diner (photos taken in Naga Coty Branch).

Here's my dinner for P194. Ehat is said to be the local favorite: Pork Cordon Bleu with a cheesy potato on the side (which I should've ordered anymore because that, which I thought on the picture as a muffin, happened to be a baked potato).

3D/2N Caramoan - Catanduanes Itinerary

docked in Matukad Island

The Majestic Wave, Puraran Beach Resort, Baras, Catanduanes

It's a Bonifacio non-working holiday on a friday - a call for long haul travels.

More than a month ago, I got an invite from an online friend for Pollilo island. But, just 2 weeks after I hit the "going" button on his fb event invite, since I am very very eager about completing my 80-province goal, I thought I could skip Pollilo for the meantime; Besides, I've been in and out of Quezon more than frequently.

I was supposed to exchange the Pollilo trip for Lubang island Mindoro; But just when I thought everything's ok, 2 nights before the trip, I have been told that there is no trip going to the island on that friday.

Without much research, I had thought about Caramoan; And when I looked in the map, it is quite close to Catanduanes, which we can probably fit for this 3 day trip.

Day 2
Island hopping (Sombrero Island and nearby rock islands, Tinalisayin, Animasola and Unnamed cove). It will be best to start the island hopping fr the unnamed cove as waves around a rock island that looks like a cathedral from a distance can get to several feet high)

A cove in San Pascual, Masbate

A Cathedral Like island from afar

Day 3:
Depart San Pascual: Choose frm either the 5am or the 9am boat trips to Pasacao.

Other Notes:
P2500 boat for island hops provided by the tourism office; Other boatmen in the pier offered P1500 for the same, but since I had a prior offer from the tourism office, though a lot more expensive, we took the tourism offer for security. After our tour, I thought the difference would have only been the life jackets and the guiding provided by the tourims officials. To tinalisayan (only), the random boatman offered P300 for our group (5 pax).

There are no petty restos in the town except for the carinderias. All the time we were in burias, we ate at Ate Jing's eatery right at the port, who has been very hospitable to us. Price is about P50/meal.
You can scout beer and even tanduay ice from the local stores around the port, but for spirits, it's only either Empe Light or Ginebra Quatro Kantos.

You may want to camp in Sombrero island where there's a wide plane of white sand. You may also scout fish from the island's caretaker by letting him know of your plans and needs. His no is 0921 612 0604:

The tourism officer, Mr Tony Cordena may be contacted on this no 0947 879 5844.
For the boats, you can contact ricky (the P300/P1500 deal on (i'll post soon or if still not available, ask for him in the port) and just let the tourism know that you've already arranged for the boat).

Calaguas Island, Camarines Norte

shot from the kubo

The trip that began from a forum and made 19 instant new travel friends

PEXers Calaguas

We scheduled this trip months ahead. There were supposed to be 32 of us in this trip but a few days before the scheduled departure, North Korea shot an impending disaster. Camarines, and generally Bicol, was put under a no fly no sail zone.

approaching calaguas

We did not bother about the warning, except that we weren’t sure whether we can get the boatman to get us there alongside the memorandum. Good thing, the notice was withdrawn hours before we are scheduled to leave. Everyone was all day waiting for the news.

While almost half of us withdrew their interest at the same time of the release of the warning, At 7:45pm, 19 of us showed up with thrill in Superlines Bus Station in Cubao.
water quality in Calaguas ISland

Itinerary:

Day 0
7pm Meet up in Superlines Cubao. Took DAET Express leaving 7:45. Paid P515.00

7:45pm to 6am travel time cubao to paracale

Day 1
6-7am breakfast at a nearby carinderia. I paid P65 for a cup of coffee, egg, fried rice and 2 skinless longganisa. Meals are fairly priced. Hotdog/Egg at P10. Pancit at P10/half serving.

7-8:30am Went to the market for food supplies. Prices are probably the same price as manila though quality wise, for vegetables, seems like stocks have been on standby for days and days. Not so much selection too. Probably 3 vendors for red meat, 2 for fish, and a few for vegetables.  There was a refilling station at P50/5gallons. We did not have the container so we paid P200 deposit, and got it back upon return. We borrowed an ice chest from our boatman, mang nelson, and he asked for P100 for ice. The ice vendor is right next to the port.

9am Depart to Calaguas Island

10:30 am Arrival

Day 2

10am Depart Calaguas

11:30am Arrive in the port. Rinse (c/o Mang nelson’s relative’s house).

dinner serving

ready to leave calaguas island

Breakdown of expenses:

515 bus fare cubao to paracale via superlines

65 breakfast in Paracale
448 boat rent, per person (P8500/19)
167 contribution for the food and drinks
120 entrance and barangay fees
16 cottage (300/19 pax)
10 Rinse Water (from Pump in island)
60 van fare paracale to daet
105 lunch in Happy Choices SM DAET for 2 viands + 1 rice
360 bus fare daet to cubao via superlines airconary bus (ac bus but ordinary fare)

the P500/day hut accomodation in Calaguas Island

other white sand beaches around Calaguas Island for side trips

Some tips:

*For those who’ll run out of funds, there is one Rural Bank atm in the town center servicing Banknet, Expressnet and Megalink cards.

*I managed to get a contact for a better priced boat; Nilo Canesa 09214845150. Kindly say it’s a referral from Ian. He said he’ll accommodate P7000 for up to 20 persons. His boat  he said is also bigger.

*In case you’re coming in small groups, you can use smaller boats but it might not be that safe sailing. The waves could be really strong along the 1.5 – 2hr boat ride. Might as well wait until a bigger group comes and negotiate to share with them.

*make sure you have Bonamine available. A lot of the people in the bus were puking like it were a contest.

*While in the island, I bought buko’s from the caretaker at P25 each. There are also stores in the island with the following known prices: 8oz softdrinks: P10  GSM Blue/Emperador litro: P100  Marlboro lights: P40

*Those who sit in the boat rear shall be drier than those in front. Pick up the slack

*You can climb the rocks on the right side of the island facing the beach. Just make sure you will be on your sandals cause it’s quite rough of rocks. Snorking activity is zero unless you come close to these rock formations.

*For those without tents, you can rent P300 from the caretaker. On the other hand, there are hut accomodations at P500 good for up to three persons.

*Before reaching the island, you’ll come across several other islands of white sand beach like pulang daga, maculabo, etc; Might want to include these in the trip and during negotiation with the boatman. Behind the island of tinaga (or calaguas) are also other seemingly much better beaches. See google maps.
